Improving COVID-19 vaccine uptake: a message co-design process for a national mHealth intervention in Colombia

RESEARCH ARTICLE

This research article addresses the importance of vaccination against COVID-19, especially in regions such as Latin America, which is among those with the highest mortality rates due to this virus. Through the project ‘Digital Applications to Monitor Novel Coronavirus Disease and Response in Colombia – syndromic and vaccination surveillance (DIAMOND-R)’, messages were co-designed to encourage vaccination. The article describes the methodology used to co-design audio messages that were based on the knowledge, perceptions, and experiences that the Colombian population had about vaccination. The co-design process described in the article consisted of four phases: 1) formative research – quantitative and qualitative, 2) iterative process of writing messages according to the findings of the formative research, 3) evaluation of the content of the messages, and 4) evaluation of the voices of the audio messages. Reflexivity processes through team meetings also informed the development of the audio messages.
